Santa Rosa County and the surrounding areas of Northwest Florida have a proud history of military service and support and the members of Leadership Santa Rosa Class 29 who started and completed the memorial in an incredible 18 months.

The Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter, with a crew of four Louisiana Army National Guardsmen, callsign Mojo 69, was on a flight that departed Eglin Air Force Base site A-15 at approximately 8:16 pm to conduct Rolled Duck (inflatable boat) and Helocast water insertion training missions involving Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) Marines and began slow movement north toward the shoreline. As the aircraft went over the waters of the Santa Rosa Sound, the crew experienced degraded visual environments and tried to gain control of the helicopter. Approximately two minutes (8:21 pm) after going over water, the aircraft crashed in Santa Rosa Sound about one mile north of A-15.
