Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station
At Rodanthe, Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station’s compound connects
visitors to a historic district consisting of five houses and outbuildings (ca.1900-1950), a rare small fish house, a harbor, and a village schoolhouse, now a community space. The district shows how villages centered on life-saving stations. First built in 1874, Chicamacomico is the most completely restored life-saving station remaining along North Carolina's barrier islands.

The 198-foot Cape Hatteras lighthouse, a National Historic Landmark, is the nation’s tallest brick lighthouse. The famed lighthouse, first lit in December 1870, is open for climbing from the Friday of Easter weekend to Columbus Day. The structure, painted with black and white candy stripes, is the central feature of a light station with a Keepers Quarters and a Double Keepers Quarters. Moving the lighthouse due to shoreline erosion was a 1999 engineering marvel.
